The view from Teide's peak on one of the frequent crystal clear days is amazing; the varied colours of the many different types of volcanic rock are seen so clearly from here: ochre and rust, black and beige in fact almost any colour you can think of. At different times of the year a variety of plants such as the bushy clumps of Teide daisy flower on the higher slopes. Tenerife has as much diversity of climate and landscape as a much larger country and is often referred to as a mini-continent. The northern coast of Tenerife is bordered by steep cliffs, but the southern part of the island slopes down to one of the few regions of level coastal plain in the volcanic islands of the archipelago. Accordingly, Tenerife is a paradise for tourists and makes an idyllic holiday destination. The south of the Island, particularly Playa de las Americas, is world famous for its nightlife scene.

The weather in Tenerife is usually hot and sunny, ideal for those lazy days on the beach relaxing and taking occasional cooling dips in the sea. For the more energetic there are ball games, surfing, beach volleyball and many other games. While playing we move around exposing each and every part of our bodies getting a nice all-over suntan rather than bronzed front and rear with white side panels. Walking along the lesser populated stretches of the beautiful coastlines provides gentle exercise with interesting little rock pools to explore.

Tenerife has a great variety of micro-climates in a very small geographic area and provides interest for many different types of tourist, not just those looking for beaches but also others that enjoy hiking, climbing, paragliding, cycling, photography or any other outdoor pursuit that benefits from the wonderful climate and diversity of topography and landscape available to visitors.


The greatest beaches on Tenerife.

  • Playa de las Terasitas, located north of Santa Cruz this was extended in 1973 by bringing in sand from the Sahara desert, palm trees for shade and very popular.
  • Playa de las Americas, being located at the island's south-eastern extreme, now offers several good sandy beaches as well as a modern infrastructure for tourism.
  • Playa de Los Cristianos, firstly has the original beach in the port and secondly the - Playa de las Vistas joining Los Cristianos and Las Americas.Tenerife beaches - Sun is always hot
  • Playa de las Galletas, at the island's southern extreme, with great hotels and sports installations, mostly stony but one small sandy beach.
  • Playa de El Puertito, a black sand beach with one small bar and no pretensions to be a tourist resort.
  • Playa del Roque, another wonderful beach of black sand.
  • Playa de las Caletillas, another centre of international tourism, three marvelous small bays close to Candelaria.
  • Playa de San Juan, a lovely blue flag beach of black sand.
  • Playa de Los Gigantes, is small for the size of the town but understandable when one looks at the surrounding incredible landscape.
  • Lago de Martianez, although not strictly a beach it has to be included because of the sheer size and beauty of this multi-pool complex.
  • Playa de El Medano, a lovely long natural beach which starts in the village and stretches to Montana Roja,a favorite of wind and kite surfers.
